HE CAME AS A LITTLE LAMB

He is our mighty Creator, He's the everlasting I AM;
He's the only true Good Shepherd, But He came as a little Lamb.
      He made the weak and helpless sheep,
      With lambs so sweet and silly...
      But died as a sacrificial Lamb,
      To prove He loves us really.

He is our mighty Creator, But He made Himself a man;
He's the Lion of the tribe of Judah, But He came as a little Lamb.
      He made the sheep with coats of white
      And cuddly lambs all wooly...
      But died as a sacrificial Lamb,
      To make us wholly holy.

He is our mighty Creator, But a helpless child He came;
He's the Judge of all the wicked, But He came as a little Lamb.
      Born in a stable, in a manger laid,
      Because He was so lowly...
      He died as a sacrificial Lamb,
      The love of God to show me.

IT WAS AN ORDINARY MORN

It was an ordinary morn, As anyone could see,
When Christ the holy Lord was born, For you and me.

They laid Him in a manger trough, No palace grand was His,
His poverty was real enough, As always is.

The shepherds saw the glorious sight, They heard the glory sound,
Then hastened through the starry night To Bethlehem town.

Where sturdy ox or donkey were, They saw the newborn Lamb,
Held to the virgin's heart secure— The great I Am.

His was an ordinary birth, The sun began to rise,
But Light shone out to all the earth In glad surprise.

Extr'ordinary was the morn, As ev'ry man may see,
When Christ the holy Lord was born For you, for me.

OXEN ARE LOWING IN STABLES DIM

Oxen are lowing in stables dim
Dark are the alleys in Bethlehem;
Hush, children, sleep through the whispering night,
Circled by stars with a radiance bright.

Slumber, Judea, but in your hills
Shepherds awake to celestial thrills;
Hark, the bright angel speaks to their fear,
Tidings of gladness of Life they hear.

Sleep, deeply sleep--O Bethlehem--
Oxen and roosters, and donkey and Lamb--
Joseph bows down to the One they've adored,
Mary exults in her newborn Lord.

Sleep, little Child of the Highest--sleep,
Hidden away in the silences deep;
Dim is the stable, dark is the night
Where You are born, precious Child of Light.

SHEPHERDS ALL, AWAKE!

Shepherds all, awake! See-- the heavens quake!
Hear the angels say, "Christ our Lord is born today!"
    By the shining star be led to the Holy One,
    Lying in a manger bed, David's holy Son,
           Wonder now, as angels do,
           What has God now given you?
Join the angels, "Hallelue, Hallelue, Hallelue,
     Glory to our God on high;
Hallelue, Hallelue, Glory to our God on High."

Ev'ry heart, awake! Come for Jesus' sake!
He has died for all, died to ransom Adam's fall.
   Heaven's glory shines abroad, through the earth again
   See the glorious Gift of God given ev'ry man!
           Marvel now, as angels do,
           What the Lord has offered you,
Join the angels, "Hallelue, Hallelue, Hallelue,
     Glory to our God on high;
Hallelue, Hallelue, Glory to our God on High."

SHINE, SILVER STAR

Shine, silver star  (of glory)
Shine from afar  (the story)
Shepherds to bring  (adoring)
Seeking a King!
Bright angels tell the Savior's birth,
True Prince of Peace on earth!
    Come, all people, see the Son!
    With glad shepherds, joyful, run!
    With glad shepherds, joyful, run!
Shine, silver Star!
To the newborn Christ child come!

Shine, silver star  (of glory)
Shine from afar  (the story)
Nations to bring  (adoring)
Worship the King!
The King of Glory comes to birth,
Shine, Heaven's Light, on earth!
    Come, all people, see God's Son!
    To the mighty Savior come!
    To the mighty Savior come!
Shine, silver Star!
To the living Savior come!

THE SONG OF THE SHEPHERDS

A Christmas Medley, with a Narrative Poem of Varied Voices

(male voice)

I see the stars this winter night,
So near, so clear, so pure, so bright,
And think of shepherds— long to know
The song they heard so long ago.

Angels we have heard on high, Sweetly singing o'er the plain,    And the mountains in reply Echoing their joyous strains,      Gloria in Excelsis Deo,  Gloria in Excelsis Deo.
                 [Verse 1 from "Angels We Have Heard on High”]

(child's voice)

What are the words the shepherds sing,
The angel song— as, hurrying—
They leave their sheep to hasten down
Into a dark and slumb'ring town?

O little town of Bethlehem, how still we see thee lie!
Above thy deep and dreamless sleep the silent stars go by.
Yet in thy dark streets shineth the everlasting Light;
The hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight.
                             [Verse 1 of "O Little Town of Bethlehem"]

(female voice)

They reach the stable, see inside
A Jewish man, his joyous bride
And God-- the Son of Man— between!
They bow before the sacred scene.

Silent night, holy night, All is calm, all is bright
Round you virgin mother and child. Holy Infant so tender and mild,
Sleep in heavenly peace, Sleep in heavenly peace.

Holy, holy, holy!  Lord God Almighty!  Early in the morning our
song shall rise to Thee;  Holy, holy, holy! merciful and mighty!
God in three persons, blessed Trinity.

Holy, holy, holy! tho' the darkness hide Thee, Tho' the eye of sinful man
thy glory may not see; Only Thou art holy!  there is none beside Thee
Perfect in pow'r, in love, and purity.
                                                     [Verse 1 of "Silent Night"]
                                                     [Verses 1 and 3 of "Holy,Holy, Holy"]

(male voice)

The day now dawns as oft before,
But shepherd hearts forevermore
Will marvel at Salvation's birth
And sing His tidings through the earth.

Go tell it on the mountain, Over the hills and ev'rywhere;
Go tell it on the mountain, That Jesus Christ is born.
         The light shone in the heavens, To cover all the earth
         It was a sign to tell men About our Savior's birth.
Go tell it on the mountain, Over the hills and ev'rywhere;
Go tell it on the mountain, That Jesus Christ was born.

His name shall be the Prince of Peace, Forevermore adored,
The Wonderful, the Counsellor, The great and mighty Lord!
The Wonderful, the Counsellor, The great and mighty Lord!
                     [Verse 2 of "Go Tell It on the Mountain"]
                     [Verse 2 of "To Us a Child of Hope is Born"]

(unison: a boy's and a girl's voices)

In shepherd hearts was carried long,
The joy, the hope, the angel song;
But now to us the task is flown
To make the Lord of Glory known .

Joy to the world, the Lord is come!  Let earth receive her King;
Let ev'ry heart prepare Him room,  And heav'n and nature sing... etc.

Joy to the earth, the Savior reigns! Let men their songs employ,
While fields and floods, rocks hills and plains Repeat the sounding joy...etc.
                                               [Verses 1 and 2 of "Joy to the World"]

WHAT WERE THE THOUGHTS THAT MARY THOUGHT?

What were the thoughts that Mary thought
That blessed, holy morn?
What worship in her wonderings,
When God her Son was born?
She heard the shepherds' story,
She saw them bend the knee,
She held the Lord of Glory,
The Child of mystery.

She knew the Angel's promise,
Good Zachariah's word,
Elizabeth confirming it,
Her salutation heard.
She knew she was a virgin--
Her holy God was true!
And wrapped within the swaddling clothes
Lay God in man made new.

WRITE IT ON THE WIND

Write it on the wind, in letters made of sand,
Send it to the reaches of the earth again,
Who will hear the message, who will understand,
Written on the wind in letters made of sand.

Write it on the clouds, so huge across the blue,
Sailing over oceans and the mountains too;
Who will heed the message, knowing it is true,
Written in the heavens, scrolling through the blue?
        Who will understand? Who will understand?

Write it on your heart, to pass along today,
Moisten it with tears to soften up the clay,
Give it to the angel--speed it on its way,
Written on your heart, and given to the clay.
        Who will understand?

Write it in His groaning, hidden from the earth,
Give it to the virgin, bring it to its birth,
Show it to the shepherds, worship at its worth,
Written in a groaning, given to the earth.
        Who will understand?

Write it in the Word, and give it to the poor,
Bless it to the children of the sick and sore,
Breathe upon the myst'ry, open wide the door,
Open up your hand, and give it to the poor.
        Who will understand? Who will understand?
        Who will understand? Who will understand?
